Würzburg is planning a new tram service leading from the historic city centre to the growing Hubland University Campus. This line will skirt the Würzburg Residence, a Unesco world heritage site.
schneider+schumacher have been commissioned to investigate how to design the new tram line, which passes close to the Residence’s historic buildings and monuments, so that it is compatible with the urban setting.
The design approach is based on analysing Balthasar Neumann’s original plans for the Residence Square and the adjoining areas of the city. The resulting design preserves the visual integrity of the historic urban setting and embeds the tramline in the open spaces in a restrained and elegant manner.
The work is to be put before the Unesco Commission in Paris and includes establishing where tram stops next to the Residence should be positioned and where to locate the tramlines, as well as designing the tram stops and infrastructure within the core area of the heritage site.
