KIJU Youth Centre
Munich-Riem, 2001 - 2003
Schools/educational facilities, Social housing
The youth centre (KIJU) located in the former airport turned trade fair city of Munich-Riem today runs along the south promenade, which frames the terrain park from the landscape.
Deep cuts within the simple shape of this building create entrances and patios. The large glazing in these incisions creates an exciting exchange between the inside and outside environment. The buildings use is divided into children and a youth areas, the two being divided by a shared multi-purpose space in the middle, which contains both the Info-center and café. The longitudinal two-storey corridor, builds the backbone of the design, creating a spatial link between the two storeys.
The black and yellow checkerboard facade forms a reference to the former runway of the airport on this site, as well as, with its quite unconventional design, facilitates the identification of children and young people with their new playground.
