Südschnellweg Hannover

Hannover, 2015
Urban design, Transport infrastructure buildings
JV with BPR Verkehrsplaner and LAD+

The renewal of Südschnellweg affords an opportunity to upgrade the city around the present Hochstrasse and, in the long term, to enhance the landscape as a nature conservation area and recreation space.

The proposal involves local re-routing of through-traffic on the B3 through a road tunnel. This tunnel would start east of Hildesheimer Strasse and then continue to the existing dam, west of Schützenstrasse. After the tunnel, the proposal is to continue the Bundesstrasse on a wide, two-part bridge spanning over the Leinaue. The new bridge will thus allow sensitive landscape close to the Ricklinger Kiesteiche (Ricklinger gravel ponds) to be reinstated, and it will offer better views of the whole area surrounding the Leinaue.

By relocating the highway in a tunnel in Döhren, urban renewal can take place. Open spaces and built-up areas will benefit from this additional space. The renewal of Südschnellweg thus opens up the possibility of enhancing – both ecologically and aesthetically – not only the landscape around the Leineaue, but also the Döhren neighbourhood.
