Sun Spots

Frankfurt am Main, 1988
Design/Object

The building Gutleutstraße 30 was vacant for several weeks during its refurbishment. This project created a relationship between the building and the time it takes the sun to move around the building.

The arrangement was pre-determined by the building structure. Each of the sixteen windows was allocated at a time, when the sun left a projection of light through the window on the floor. Each spot was carefully marked at the specific time and coloured in white reflective street marking paint.

The pattern created is the visualisation of space and time on a specific day (the longest day of the year) in a specific space. The exact correlation of sun spot and paint spot is given only on that day, whereas on all other days the sun spots overlay the paint spots only partially, approaching and retreating day by day.
