Urban Village Lörick

2024 Ongoing project
Urban design, Residential buildings

schneider+schumacher’s design for a sustainable residential neighbourhood in Düsseldorf-Lörick – in collaboration with Rainer Schmidt landscape architects and urban planners – has been awarded first prize. A total of 25 offices took part in the two-phase urban and landscape planning competition organised by the City of Düsseldorf. Nine designs reached the second phase, following an interim presentation involving the public.

The concept behind the design by schneider+schumacher is that of an urban village, achieved by combining countryside and city in an independent and sustainable model. It is aimed at people who appreciate all the advantages of the city but who prefer to live closer to nature. The neighbourhood encompasses residential, work, leisure, culture and social activities. According to the jury, this concept makes the design a perfect fit in terms of both the location and the brief.

As Cornelia Zuschke, Councillor for Planning, Building, Housing and Property of the state capital Düsseldorf puts it: “This first-prize-winning contribution provides building plots for different residential configurations and building types and thus offers a good model for future implementation. At the same time, the design demonstrates a sensitive approach to the surroundings as well as the green spaces in the area, thus combining new and existing residential areas with attractive open spaces.”
