Competition 1st prize

schneider+schumacher won the first prize in the international competition for the project of the new Book City in the Ningbo, China. Seven international offices took part in the competition, among others Alsop Architects from London, One Design from Shanghai, the Sancho-Madridejos Architecture Office from Madrid, Vilmotte & Associes from Paris (2nd Prize) and Winking Architekten from Hamburg (3rd Prize). The aim of the competition was to find a solution for the refurbishment and expansion of the devastated industrial complex on the riverbank, implementing new functions like a book- centred culture- and shopping-center. The City of Ningbo is well known all over the world as “the first open-air library” and is regarded as the origin of the Chinese intellectuality.
The winning project reflects the dialog between tradition and future of this special place, creating of it a new City landmark.
