1st Prize in Wildgarten competition
“Wildgarten – a residential development at Rosenhügel”, is an urban development scheme offering some 1,100 apartments. It will shortly commence construction in Vienna’s 12th district and is due for completion by 2023. schneider+schumacher Vienna were awarded first prize in a competition established by Austrian Real Estate Development GmbH, which called for planners to produce designs for the district’s plots 5 and 7. The scheme comprises 14 buildings with varying floor heights and a total of 139 apartments. The jury was convinced by its “well organised arrangement, apartment floor plans, and its reductive architectural language that emphasises the materiality of the brickwork and the building proportions.“
The competition remit called for the use of sustainable, ecological building materials. For this reason, schneider+schumacher designed all five different house types as monolithic brick structures. A waterproof render applied to the outer face of brickwork provides wind protection and is pigmented in various pastel colours, according to house type. As a result, all 14 buildings have a high-quality robust, textured and haptic appearance, each with its own identity. Further design elements include wood/aluminium windows with external window shades mounted in galvanised steel frames, plus balconies with metal pergolas.
