Federal Court of Justice West Building to be renovated

The West Building at the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe is undergoing renovation by the Federal Institute for Real Estate in cooperation with Karlsruhe’s State Building Construction Office. schneider+schumacher are acting as architects throughout all work phases and construction work has already begun.

The court building, completed in 1960 to plans by Erich Schelling, is an ensemble of listed buildings comprising the West Building and the Court buildings. The 5-storey west building, with a basement, serves as an administrative building for the BGH.

In addition to optimising both energy demand and the functional operation of the building envelope, the building’s technical equipment will be renewed to meet current requirements. Interior fittings and service installations will also be refurbished, both in terms of design and technology. In addition to the renovation work, the floor layout will be adapted to meet current space standards. All the measures undertaken are being closely coordinated with the department for the preservation of historical monuments and the Schelling Architecture Foundation.
