Living and working in Bonn's federal district

20.02.2025 - Notes

schneider+schumacher has achieved a recognition award in a planning competition for a mixed residential and commercial site, located in Bonn’s government district. The jury particularly praised the overall concept for its ‘very successful façade design as well as the high-quality of the external landscaping.’ The competition was organised by Marc Asbeck Grundbesitz Bonn in cooperation with the Federal City of Bonn.

Around 70 per cent of the planned complex comprises apartments; the remaining 30 per cent is intended for office use. The project aims to create an integrative environment, harmoniously linking residential and work spaces, while ensuring distances between buildings are kept to a minimum. Positioned on the northern edge of the site, the five-building ensemble terminates the development between Langenbachstrasse to the south and Franz-Josef-Strauss-Allee to the north. Particular importance has been placed on noise protection, optimal light conditions, a southern orientation, and a green landscaped private inner courtyard.

According to the jury’s assessment: ‘The project demonstrates impressive and carefully designed high-quality façades, which give the street a striking and well-proportioned appearance. The architects have found an attractive way in which to divide the continuous block along the street into recognisable sections by means of projections and recesses, which helps to integrate it into its urban environment. This is underscored by rounding off the volumes at the corners, thus taking up architectural elements of neighbouring buildings. The decision to open up the site towards its small-scale neighbourhood creates an interesting spatial graduation towards the existing buildings in terms of the quality of the open space.’
