Tag des offenen Denkmals
Around 5,500 listed buildings throughout Germany will be opening their doors to the public on 8 September. This year the ‘Tag des offenen Denkmals’ (part of European Heritage Days), organised annually by the German Foundation for the Protection of Listed Buildings, is being held under the motto ‘Landmarks: The Witnesses of History’. It represents the German contribution to the European Heritage Days programme under the auspices of the Council of Europe.
We are taking part in this cultural event and on Sunday, 8 September will be offering two guided tours of the Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2021. Our partner Astrid Wuttke, who is in charge of the restoration of the exhibition building, will guide visitors through the Café Restaurant Mathildenhöhe and the historic water reservoir at 12:00, and again at 14:00. If you would like to join one of these tours, please register in advance at pr@schneider-schumacher.de.
In terms of worldwide importance, the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt represents a unique synthesis of architectural and urban planning. Built in 1908, according to plans by Josef Maria Olbrich and located at the highest point of the city, the exhibition building is still features prominently in the cityscape together with its Wedding Tower, the city’s landmark, built at the same time. The Café Restaurant Mathildenhöhe, located in the valve chamber of the former drinking water reservoir, offers modern cuisine at the heart of the listed building complex. The reservoir dates back to 1879, making it one of the oldest buildings on the Mathildenhöhe – and its brick walls, valve wheels and water pipes all form part of the furnishings.
