Innovative industrial estate in Schwetzingen

28.06.2024 - Notes

A modern industrial estate is to be built on the former Tompkins Barracks site in Schwetzingen, uniting heritage-listed areas and buildings on site in one ensemble. The design by schneider+schumacher has been awarded first prize in the competition, with the city of Schwetzingen acting as the client, in cooperation with the state of Baden-Württemberg and the Federal Real Estate Agency (BImA).

Alongside offices and service facilities, the site will also provide space for production workshops and crafts. Existing buildings will be integrated into the concept and transformed – for example converting an old garage for army tanks into a leisure centre. A start-up centre and an innovation centre will provide important thematic impetus on the industrial estate.

The flexibility of the building structure offers itself for a wide range of potential uses, as well as hitherto unspecified challenges. Conceived as an innovative work-life campus, it will not just be a place of work, but also provide space for living and recreation; somewhere people can find peace and quiet.
