Now open: Museum Reinhard Ernst

01.07.2024 - Notes

The Museum Reinhard Ernst (mre) is an imposing building with a bright white granite façade now establishing itself as part of Wiesbaden’s cultural axis. At the end of June after almost five years of construction work, the museum for abstract art celebrated its opening. The building is designed by Japanese architect and Pritzker Prize winner Fumihiko Maki. As general planner, schneider+schumacher Bau- und Projektmanagement GmbH was responsible for implementing the project.

In a hr-iNFO podcast entitled “Sugar-cube – The new Museum Reinhard Ernst and its architecture“, editor Christoph Scheffer talks to Michael Schumacher about how one goes about translating the materiality in Maki’s design as precisely as possible. The building covers a total area of 9,700m2. with exhibition space comprising some 2,500m2. The new museum is run by the Reinhard & Sonja Ernst Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in Wiesbaden.

The mre houses the private collection of abstract art of the entrepreneur Reinhard Ernst alongside loans from all over the world, including changing special exhibitions.
