Städel Museum roof terrace opens to visitors

Just fifty steps via the new spiral staircase in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt take visitors up to the roof, where they are rewarded with an unforgettable view of Frankfurt’s skyline. The unusual design of the staircase itself is also an eye-catcher.

schneider+schumacher’s design has succeeded in integrating a state-of-the-art concept into an existing museum building. In order to preserve the listed building, and with the help of a crane, two twelve-metre-high and eight-tonne metal structures were installed vertically in the roof space and hung off the walls. This space-saving solution thus avoided the need to make any structural changes to the building’s listed external façade. All visitors to the Städel Museum will now have free access to the 64 square metre visitors’ terrace, which P. Demandt, the director of the Städel Museum describes as the “crowning glory of a visit to the museum”.

The project was carried out in cooperation with B+G Ingenieure Bollinger und Grohmann GmbH (structural analysis, structural design and site supervision) and Metallbau Weinmann GmbH & Co. KG (spiral staircase manufacture).
